เมื่อถึงยามสุดท้ายของคืนนั้น พระพุทธองค์ก็ทรงประทานปัจฉิมโอวาทว่า "ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลายอันว่าสังขารทั้งหลายย่อมมีความเสื่อมสลายไปเป็นธรรมดา ท่านทั้งหลายจงยังกิจทั้งปวงอันเป็นประโยชน์ของตนและประโยชน์ของผู้อื่นให้ บริบูรณ์ด้วยความไม่ประมาทเถิด"หลังจากนั้นก็เสด็จเข้าดับขันธุ์ปรินิพพาน ในราตรีเพ็ญเดือน 6 นั้น
